WASHINGTON – Chief Supreme Court Justice John Roberts issued a rare statement Wednesday criticizing Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
The statement is a response to comments Schumer made outside the court after oral arguments in an abortion case.
The Justices spent about an hour listening to arguments in a Louisiana case that some say could leave just one doctor in the state legally allowed to perform the procedure.
Both Justice Roberts and Kavanaugh asked questions that suggest the law requiring abortion providers to have admitting privileges could be valid.
Schumer called out Trump-nominated justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh while slamming that perspective.
“I want to tell you, Gorsuch, I want to tell you, Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind,” said Senator Schumer. “And you will pay the price.”
Schumer went on to say, “you won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
His office says he was referencing a grassroots campaign that could result if they decide to uphold Louisiana’s restriction.
No decision has been made in the case. Justice Gorsuch did not speak during the arguments.
