LAKEWOOD – The Chautauqua Mall will celebrate 50 years of business this week.
The mall is hosting a celebration kickoff event on Thursday at 11 a.m.
The jubilee runs through Sunday, April 18, with live music, memorabilia, entertainment, giveaways and refreshments offered within the mall’s concourse.
Mall officials are asking residents to share their favorite memories and photos on social media for a chance to win a gift card to the retailer of their choice.
Additionally, there will be a ‘Post Your Memories’ wall located near center court where guests can share a message about their memories.
Under development of Edward DeBartolo, the mall opened in 1971 with Sears, Woolworth, JCPenney and Quality Markets as its anchor stores.
Several stores have since come and gone, with Office Max most recently leaving its storefront location, however, an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet plans to open in their place sometime this year.
Over the years the mall has felt some financial heartache, with the center’s parent company Washington Prime Group missing a million-dollar interest payment in February.
