MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua Area Regional Transit System could see an increase in wages for its bus drivers.

The proposed increase from $14.44 per hour to $16.66 per hour was suggested because the county is having a difficult time hiring new CARTS drivers.

The lack of employees, County Director of Public Facilities Brad Bentley explained during the Public Facilities meeting on Monday, has a direct effect on their ability to plan and provide bus services countywide.

“All anybody has to do is go down the street to a Tim Horton’s and look at the sign that says 15 dollars an hour and understand why we’re not getting applicants here,” said Bentley.

Bentley predicts that change could have a one-hundred-thousand dollar effect annually on the county’s budget.

The resolution will be addressed during the full county legislature meeting later this month.
