JAMESTOWN – The Jamestown Public School District will be hiring a graphic designer to rework the high school’s logo and mascot, discounting the use of the “J with feathers” branding.

This week the School Board approved a resolution officially changing the logo and mascot, however a motion to change the “Red Raider” name failed.

Last month at this time the district’s Mascot Committee recommended the school discontinue using the “J with feathers” and find a new logo.

The committee, reassembled by Superintendent Dr. Kevin Whitaker last year, was tasked with examining the school’s mascot, imagery used and nickname.

A recent push from some in the community refueled the effort to rebrand, citing disrespect to Native Americans.
