ALBANY (WENY) – Aspiring nurses are getting some assistance in the Empire State with the help of a new scholarship.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the opening of the application period for the “Nurses For Our Future” Scholarship Wednesday.

According to her website, the scholarship will cover tuition for 1,000 new or current healthcare workers to earn an Associate’s Degree in Nursing or Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing at a two-year or four-year New York State public college or university.

The program is designed to help recruit and retrain nursing and health care professionals to serve areas most in need.

Since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, hospitals have been facing a labor shortage and a massive influx of patients.

There are currently more than 9,300 openings for Registered Nurses in New York State.

The scholarship will mean 1,000 more students can enter a nursing program in either SUNY or CUNY.
