JAMESTOWN – A Southwestern High School senior who donates her Christmas gift money each year to help bring holiday cheer to U.S. troops stationed overseas was recognized and thanked for her selfless gesture by State Senator George Borrello.
Senator Borrello praised Melissa DeVore of Jamestown for her exceptional generosity and presented her with a New York State Senate Certificate of Recognition. He noted that she began making Christmas donations five years ago, when she was in 8th grade. She donates the money her parents normally spend on her Christmas presents to the cause.
“Melissa’s tremendous example of generosity is inspiring and deserves to be recognized. It is clear that, for her, bringing joy to our troops is its own Christmas present,” said Senator Borrello. “She understands the enormous sacrifices made by our military men and women and how difficult it is for them to be away from home and family at the holidays.”
He continued, “She has a maturity beyond her years and a deep-rooted compassion for others. I am certain that this is one of many profound contributions she will make during her lifetime. On behalf of our community, I convey my deepest thanks.”
Also joining Senator Borrello to express appreciation was Susan Rowley, President of the Blue Star Mothers Lake Erie, New York Chapter. Rowley explained that the care packages mean so much to the troops and praised Melissa’s commitment.
“Melissa is a wonderful young person and a great role model for her peers. To see someone her age so focused on helping others is truly uplifting,” she said. “For me and all Blue Star Mothers, every gesture of support is meaningful. However, to see Melissa’s above-and-beyond sacrifice and compassion for our troops – our sons and daughters – means the world to me and every member in our chapter. We cannot thank her enough.”
