County Board Of Elections Responds To Government Watchdog Criticism

MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Board of Elections has responded to a government watchdog report that criticized the local election office’s transparency.

Board of Election Commissioners Brian Abram and Luz Torres issued the statement late last week.

The two specifically responded to the New York Coalition for Open Government’s report criticizing the office for failing to answer a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request.

They say due to an oversight in Chautauqua County’s FOIL review process, the Coalition’s FOIL request to the Board of Elections made via email last summer did not receive a response.

Until the Coalition’s Report was released last week, the office was unaware of the oversight and will be sending the Coalition a response as soon as possible.

Officials say the Board of Elections frequently receives FOIL requests from the public, and routinely reply to them in a timely manner.  They regret the unintended oversight that occurred in this case.
