LAKEWOOD, NY (Erie News Now) – In a bizarre online trend, groups of teenagers and young adults are dressing up in suits to go see the new film “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”

The teens call themselves “Gentle-Minions,” a play on the word “gentlemen.” The trend started on TikTok, but has since taken over other social medias as well.

“Usually they’re teenagers and younger people, and they’ll come in just dressed wearing suits, and they’ll just have fun and watch the movie,” says Liam Cramer, Assistant Manager at the Lakewood Cinema in Lakewood, NY. “With the meme culture now on Tiktok, it became a trend and it’s taken off. We had a group come in with the suits last night.”

While most Gentle-Minions are peaceful, some online have had the police called on them, and some theaters are going so far as to ban anyone wearing a suit from going to see the movie.

“[Gentle-Minions] that have come into our theaters have been pretty polite, but we have heard of some people causing disturbances,” added Cramer.

“Minions: The Rise of Gru,” which stars Steve Carell, released last week, and as long as you’re not wearing a suit, you can watch it at your local theater.
