ERIE, Pa. (Erie News Now) – Olivia Newton-John, the chart topping singer has died at the age of 73.

She put up a courageous, decades long battle with cancer.

She passed away this morning at her home in Southern California, according to a statement from her husband.

Her big break came in the 1978 blockbuster, “Grease”.

Local radio personality, Joe Lang of 94.7 BOB FM, remembers the first time he saw Olivia Newton-John on the big screen.

“Our family was on vacation in Ocean City, Maryland and we went to the movies, he told Erie News Now. They had a double-feature playing, and the first movie was “Grease” and the second movie was “Jaws.” They showed “Grease” first and I just wanted to see it again.”

In 1981, “Physical” became her biggest hit, spending 10 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100.

“Very few things stand the test of time like her songs and her career Lang said. Her battle with breast cancer, a champion for women, she was an icon.”
