JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – A group of volunteers have raised over $31,000 to help fund asbestos cleanup within a new woman’s shelter in Jamestown.

Earlier this month, those with the Ascension Leadership Academy stepped up to help offset abatement costs for the United Christian Advocacy Network’s planned shelter in Downtown Jamestown.

In total, 18 volunteers raised $31,013 in 20 days. Officials say this donation comes at a critical time. UCAN City Mission is the only homeless shelter in Chautauqua County, and there is an urgent need for expansion.

When complete, the new shelter would provide 85 beds specifically for women and children, helping them escape unsafe motels with crime, drugs, and sex trafficking.

Once an abatement company is hired, construction is expected to resume within a month-or-so. The full project is slated to be complete in early 2024.
