DUNKIRK, NY (WNY News Now) – A nationally recognized fishing tournament is making its way to northern Chautauqua County next week.

The National Walleye Tour, which holds competitions around the country, will hold its championship over the course of several days beginning on the 24th.

Officials from the city held a press conference Wednesday during which the benefits to the community were discussed.

An estimated $300,000 in direct economic impact will come as a result of the event, both from the countless fishermen as well as tourists visiting Dunkirk.

Mayor Willie Rosas discussed the effort that has gone into bringing the contest to the city.

“We’ve tried to get it here for the past two years. It’s a very competitive process. We compete against other communities across the country,” Rosas explained. “This was not an easy thing to accomplish, but we’re very proud to be able to be hosting the championship round of the National Walleye Championships.”
