MAYVILLE, NY (WNY News Now) – The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office received a record number of pistol permit applications this week, ahead of new policy charges regarding the process.

The law enforcement agency’s pistol permit office generally receives around 1,000 to 1,200 permit applications per year. In the last month alone, the department says they received around 1,000.

Three main changes to the application process took effect on Thursday, September 1 as part of a comprehensive legislative package to strengthen New York’s gun laws.

First, authorities will review applicant’s social media accounts. Next, those who wish to sign up must also disclose anyone who live with them. Finally, the person would also take a 16-hour safety course.

For those who applied ahead of the updated procedure, officials ask them to be patient as deputies work their way through the log, which will be processed in the order the were received.

After that, the office will work with local safety instructors to develop a new training curriculum before accepting new applications.
