Preventing Veteran Suicides

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Erie News Now) — Suicides among veterans continues to be an issue across the United States. President Biden discussed the issue in his State of the Union last week, but local groups say more work still needs to be done.

Darrell Owens, the Directors of Government Affairs with America’s Warrior Partnership said while VA Centers do help the veterans, sometimes, it’s not enough. Owens said the amount of veterans committing suicide every day is staggering. Owens said that sometimes it’s up to community members to help area veterans. He also said that other organizations like America’s Warrior Partnership can help connect veterans with resources they may need.

“You have to look at a veteran, holistically and say, ‘what are the underlying factors that are causing this veterans to be so hopeless to get to that point of hopelessness? Where they’re taking their concerns as an option?’ and a lot of that involves being in the community, you know, being employed, having good family structure and and being settled, being happy”, explained Owens.

America’s Warrior Partnership is a national nonprofit that helps partner with communities to prevent veteran suicide.
