JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – Jamestown area residents marked the first day of Lent on Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday, also known as the Day of Ashes, is a day of repentance, when Catholics and Christians confess their sins and profess their devotion to God leading up to Easter.

At the First Presbyterian Church of Jamestown, parishioners and community members alike, took part in a drive-up, walk-up ashes to go blessing.

Pastor Tara Eastman also handed out to-go snack bags, for anyone in need.

“We also have started a ‘web of warmth’ that’s over in this cul-de-sac area right behind me, that had hats, scarves, and gloves,” explained Eastman. “We’ve refilled that in the last couple weeks, like six times.”

In addition to a noontime service, Pastor Eastman will return to the church’s parking lot at the corner of East 6th Street and Prendergast Avenue providing public blessing from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
