LITTLE VALLEY, NY (WNY News Now) – Scammers appear to be posing as law enforcement officers in Cattaraugus County.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning about this new phone scam on Thursday.

Over the past few days, deputies say a number of residents have received calls from someone claiming to be an employee of the Sheriff’s Office.

The caller is directing people to send them money electronically, or the person would face federal criminal charges.

In one of the specific incidents, the callee was informed they failed to provide a DNA sample and were ordered to send the sample with a cash fee.

The law enforcement agency says this is a scam and advise the public not to give any personal information over the phone, or send electronic funds, to a stranger.
