CANANDAIGUA, NY (Erie News Now) — Police near Rochester, N.Y., fatally shot a Warren man who pointed a gun at officers this week.

According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, Brandon Zurkan died at the hospital after two sheriff’s deputies and two Canandaigua Police officers fired at him on Tuesday.

The incident started with a pursuit in the Town of East Bloomfield after 911 callers reported a car driving recklessly around 11:30 p.m. Zurkan fired multiple shots from his car during the chase and ran a red light, according to authorities

Zurkan’s car hit a curb in Canandaigua and drove through a fence, which ended the chase. He then got out and advanced toward officers, the sheriff said.

Officers told Zurkan to drop his gun for eight minutes, but he raised the gun toward the officers, who then fired at him, authorities said.

Zurkan was taken to a hospital but died shortly afterwards.

The sheriff said they don’t know why Zurkan was in the area.
