FREWSBURG, NY (WNY News Now) – A local artist responsible for a memorable mural in the Town of Carroll has passed away, we look at the legacy left behind.
The “Happy Face Barn” marks the gateway into Frewsburg. Owned by Martin Gage, he enlisted the help of local artist Terry (Travis) Johnson to paint the iconic mural.
The Barn was moved from its Jamestown location to Frewsburg in 1906, then in 1982 Martin Gage had artist Travis Johnson paint a happy face on the side of the barn, similar to one Gage saw in the Midwest.
In October of 2021, the “Happy Face Barn” was recognized by the Carroll Historical Society as a staple of Frewsburg, Travis’s final paint job.
Moving forward, those with the historical society hope that the “Happy Face Barn’s” smile will continue to be alive through the brush of another artist.
