JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – The Gus Macker tournament originally began in 1987, and since then has grown to become a beloved event throughout the years.

Now, many community members are jumping at the bits to shoot some hoops and enjoy friendly competition.

“A big part of the success of this tournament will be with the young people and the stamp they put on it, so that’s extremely important to me,” said owner of Collaborate Children’s Solutions Patrick Smeraldo.

Smeraldo is working to incorporate the use of social media for advertising and community engagement.

“There are different tools that we’re using now with social media and getting the word out, and activities that are happening at the Macker that weekend and it’s important for us to listen to those folks, those individuals being students now and what they believe and what they should dream this into,” Smeraldo said.

Those at C.C.S understand the importance of listening to the ideas of others, especially when it comes to a large event like the Macker.

“It doesn’t always have to be top down, we don’t have to tell them. Instead, everybody has a story, let them tell their story and from their story we’ll push the drive. That’s important to me, with the projects that we do, that it is a collaboration and everybody has a voice at the table,” said Smeraldo.

The Gus Macker 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament will take place in Jamestown on August 19th and 20th. For more information, you can visit www.macker.com.
