JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – Social media can be a powerful tool when used correctly, however that’s not always the case with the younger generation. Now, a local high school student is showing his peers that great things can be accomplished through using platforms responsibly.

Jonas Gesing is a Junior at Southwestern High School who has teamed up with Patrick Smeraldo of Collaborative Children’s Solutions to help promote the Gus Macker basketball tournament on social media.

The young promoter understands the importance of utilizing different networking websites to help promote events, bring awareness to local issues, and simply showcase community pride.

“I’d hope that they’d see that hey, we can use social media for good. We can use it to help promote our community and encourage people to do things so I really hope they do see it and take advantage of that. I mean honestly, you can do whatever you want as long as it’s going to be good, but I really hope that they realize that hey, we can do things in our community too and we can do it and make our community better,” said Gesing.

Gesing hopes that his fellow students will see what can be done using the power of social media, and follow in his footsteps, using sites like Facebook and Snapchat for good causes and encourage others to do the same.
