Buffalo, New York (WNY News Now) – Ajaypal Dhillon (22) of Scarborough, Ontario has been arrested and charged with attempting to smuggle over 100 kilograms of marijuana into the United States via the Peace Bridge Port of Entry in Buffalo, New York.

U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced the arrest and charges against Ajaypal Dhillon, who now faces criminal complaints for possession with intent to distribute marijuana and importing the illicit substance into the United States. The charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison, with a maximum potential penalty of 40 years behind bars, as well as a $5,000,000 fine.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, July 27, 2023. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Peace Bridge Port of Entry encountered a semi-trailer operated by Dhillon during a routine inspection. The customs documentation presented by Dhillon indicated that the shipment consisted of frozen waffles destined for a grocery store warehouse in Georgia. However, upon verifying with the shipper it was found that the shipment was a fraudulent cover for illegal substances.

Following the detention hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer ordered Dhillon to remain in custody until further proceedings in the case.
