Fire Engulfs Olean Home, Six Injured, Two Dogs Lost

(WNY News Now) – In a devastating incident on October 8, 2023, a residential fire engulfed a home at 304 E. State Street, Olean, leading to injuries to six residents, the loss of two dogs, and minor injuries to two firefighters.

Olean – At 4:44 AM on October 8, 2023, the Olean City Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 304 E. State Street, Olean, where they encountered a blazing inferno on the first floor. Amid the chaos, firefighters discovered a trapped resident who had escaped to the 2nd-story roof after exiting a 3rd-story window.

Swiftly, crews deployed a ground ladder to rescue the stranded occupant while simultaneously initiating efforts to douse the fire. Flames had already traveled extensively through concealed spaces within the home, necessitating the deployment of multiple hose lines. The blaze was eventually brought under control.


Tragically, two residents sustained significant burn injuries, while four others were treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation at Olean General Hospital. Two dogs perished in the fire, and two firefighters received treatment for minor injuries at the scene.

The City of Olean received support from various agencies, including Olean Police, Trans Am Ambulance, Weston Mills Fire, Allegany Fire, National Grid, and National Fuel. Love Thy Neighbor offered assistance to the firefighting teams, with Hinsdale and the Town of Olean on standby.

In light of this incident, the City of Olean Fire Department urges residents to ensure functioning smoke detectors and emphasizes the importance of sleeping with bedroom doors closed for added safety.
