Police Respond to Kidnapping and Robbery Attempt

(WNY News Now) – On Sunday, October 15th, 2023, officers were called to Butternut Street in response to a potential robbery. They ended up uncovering a kidnapping attempt involving three suspects.

Syracuse – Late on Sunday evening, at approximately 8:42 P.M., officers responded to a police call in the 600 block of Butternut Street. At the scene, they encountered a 28-year-old male victim who reported an armed robbery attempt by a 28-year-old male identified as Aweis Maalo. Maalo was swiftly apprehended by the officers and found to be in possession of a knife.

During the ensuing investigation, it was revealed that the victim’s 32-year-old brother was being held against his will by two other males in a residence on E. Laurel Street. Officers swiftly responded to the location and detained two suspects, Ram Khatiwada and Laxman Khatiwada, both 23 years old. They also safely secured the second victim, a 32-year-old male.


The investigation unveiled that the suspects had threatened the victims with weapons and attempted to extort money from them. Consequently, the three suspects, Aweis Maalo, Ram Khatiwada, and Laxman Khatiwada, were arrested on charges of Kidnapping in the First Degree, Burglary in the First Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree.
