(WNY News Now) -If you have been looking for a new detective TV series to sink your teeth into that
provides a mixture of nostalgia and newness together, then “Poker Face” should
probably be at the top of your list as a must-watch series.

It is a show that follows the classic premise of a murder-a-week, in which Natasha Lyonee (who starred in Orange Is the New Black and Russian Doll) plays the lead character, Charlie, who has the ability to spot when someone is lying and is able to solve the cases of random people that she encounters, especially as there are
murders regularly taking place around her.

She does not appear to be fazed by what happens, but this might be because of her casino background and the fact that she knows the ins and outs of poker but is banned from playing because of her human lie-detector abilities.

Poker is a card game where players use a combination of skill, strategy, and luck. A poker face refers to a player’s facial expression that conceals any emotions or reactions to the cards they hold. It is essential in poker to maintain a neutral or unreadable expression to avoid giving opponents information about the strength
or weakness of their poker hands. This term refers to the specific combinations of cards that a player holds during a round.

What makes “Poker Face” so good?

There is a total of 10 episodes in the first season of “Poker Face”, which has since
been renewed for a second season following the success of the first one.

Charlie has been forced to go on the run across the USA as she looks to escape and hide from a casino boss following the death of her friend, which was very suspicious. While she is continually moving about, she is solving murders all over the place, using her skills to read people to help get to the truth.

Each episode will see a murder be committed in the first portion of the show, before going back and revealing Charlie’s connection to the victim. The final part of the episode will see the mystery be solved, with various ways of justice being dished out. For good measure, the final part of the show shows her escaping the clutches of Cliff, who is trying to capture her as he tries to keep her quiet about the initial murder of her friend.

Throwback of a TV detective series

The show has been labelled as a bit of a classic throwback in terms of TV detective shows, with original formats being used. It has been compared to the classic “Columbo” in some instances, as it features a new murder with each episode and a person looking to find out who did it. Nonetheless, it is a show that is a little lighter and more comic than the old-school show.

Lyonne’s performance in each episode – which all follow the same format and premise – is among the best that we have seen, as it is engaging and can be rather interactive. Her character Charlie talks to the audience and lets them in as she is on the run and solving homicide cases, thus making it easier for people to connect with her.

A stellar cast has been used in “Poker Face”

Rian Johnson – the TV show’s director – has managed to create a cast that is full of a number of star actors, which has helped to make “Poker Face” a must-watch series.

Individuals such as Adrien Brody, Benjamin Bratt, Dascha Polanco, and Nick Nolte, have all been brought on board to play various roles throughout the series, with many playing important cameos.

Can anyone watch “Poker Face” and enjoy it?

While the name of the show may suggest that viewers may need to have an understanding of the classic casino game and know what terms like poker hands mean, “Poker Face” is a show that is highly enjoyable and one that can be watched by everyone with ease.

As mentioned, Lyonne’s performance is of a high quality and she can invest the audiences in what is happening easily. It can be wise not to binge the series and watch each episode with a break between them, as it can become a little formulaic. However, if you enjoy the classic TV detective series and want a throwback experience, then “Poker Face” should be added to your must-watch list if you have not already seen it!
