(WNY News Now) – Washington, D.C. – In a unanimous vote, the House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) passed H.Res. 965, calling for the immediate release of Ryan Corbett, a US citizen wrongfully detained by the Taliban since August 10, 2022. The resolution also condemns the wrongful detention of Americans by the Taliban.

Congresswoman Tenney has led the charge in fighting for Ryan Corbett, a husband, father, and Western New Yorker, well-being and release since she learned of his unlawful detainment. Ryan has been held without charge by the Taliban in Afghanistan since August 10, 2022, being kept in a basement cell without regular access to a bathroom, sunlight, or medical care. Tenney worked to get Ryan officially designated as a wrongful detainee by the U.S. Department of State on October 10, 2023, and introduced H.Res. 965 on January 17, 2024, further strengthening calls for his immediate release.

“By advancing this resolution out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, we reaffirm that America will never stop fighting to free Ryan Corbett,” said Congresswoman Tenney. “Thank you to Chairman McCaul for his leadership and to the 62 cosponsors of this critical legislation, whose support bolsters the voices of millions of Americans nationwide calling for Ryan’s immediate release. I look forward to seeing this legislation considered on the House floor soon, where Congress can continue to advocate for Ryan’s immediate release.”

“The Taliban are evil terrorists who commit unfathomable atrocities and take Americans hostage,” said Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman McCaul. “I want to assure Ryan’s friends and family that we will continue to fight every day until we bring him home. I am proud to support this bipartisan legislation sending a strong message to the Taliban that America, both Republicans and Democrats alike, will not tolerate the illegitimate detention of American citizens.”
