(WNY News Now) – JAMESTOWN, NY – As the moon gracefully casts its shadow across a vast stretch of the U.S., Mexico, and Canada on April 8, 2024, Chautauqua County-Jamestown Airport (JHW) is set to be the epicenter of a two-day celestial celebration.

Locals and visitors alike are invited to immerse themselves in the midday darkness and witness the eclipse spectacle, beginning around 3:15 p.m. locally.

Festivities will unfold on April 7th and 8th at the Chautauqua County-Jamestown Airport’s “Fly-by Night” event, kicking off with a pancake breakfast each morning starting at 7 am.  Attendees will have ample time to revel in the celestial wonders and engaging activities; including dozens of vendors, adding to the lively and bustling atmosphere at the airport, into the evening.

Airport Manager Shannon Fischer has unveiled exciting plans for a two-day free eclipse viewing event, transforming the airport into a vibrant hub of activity.

“The eclipse viewing party promises not only a unique spectacle in the sky but also a vibrant atmosphere filled with aviation enthusiasts, diverse vendors, and exciting activities,” said Airport Manager Shannon Fischer. “Our airport is ready to soar with excitement as we anticipate the influx of visitors who will undoubtedly make this event a truly unforgettable experience.”

A DJ will set the mood, ensuring a spirited atmosphere throughout the two-day event. There will also be time to indulge in a diverse array of culinary delights with tempting food trucks offering a variety of delectable treats.  In addition, the Great Lakes Flight Center will be offering rides to experience the eclipse from the sky.

“We have our 5 aircraft available for pilots to rent to be able to watch the eclipse from the air,” said Dave Hinz, President / Flight Instructor at Great Lakes Flight Center. “Currently we have one of our aircraft already reserved for a private rental and we’ll also be taking a group of students/pilots from our flight school up in another of our aircraft to view the eclipse from altitude.”

With Chautauqua County situated in the eclipse’s path of totality, expect a sky adorned with numerous aircraft arrivals, creating a dynamic and memorable experience for aviation enthusiasts.

“We’re thrilled to showcase the beauty of Chautauqua County-Jamestown Airport as a prime destination for the 2024 Solar Eclipse,” said Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr. “Welcoming visitors from near and far, our airport promises an unforgettable celebration of aviation, entertainment, and the wonders of the cosmos. We invite everyone to join us and make lasting memories under the Chautauqua County sky.”

On Sunday at 10 a.m., a special dedication ceremony will honor Joseph Minarovich, a stalwart in aviation whose legacy continues to inspire younger generations. The ceremony will pay homage to his enduring commitment and passion for aviation, symbolizing a fitting tribute during this celestial event.

With tens of thousands of visitors expected to converge on the area and County, the airport’s vibrant celebration promises an unparalleled experience for eclipse enthusiasts, combining aviation, entertainment, and celestial wonder.

Chautauqua County-Jamestown Airport welcomes everyone to join the festivities, creating lasting memories amidst the cosmic spectacle. For more details and event updates, visit chqgov.com/eclipse.
