(WNY News Now) – Jamestown, NY – American Fiction (Wed., March 6 at 7 p.m.) is Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain. American Fiction is rated R and is 117 minutes long. The film is nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor – Wright, and Best Supporting Actor – Sterling K. Brown.

Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Ava DuVernay, Origin (Sat., March 9 at 7 p.m.) chronicles the tragedy and triumph of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson as she investigates a global phenomenon of epic proportions. Portrayed by Academy Award nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard), Isabel experiences unfathomable personal loss and love as she crosses continents and cultures to craft one of the defining American books of our time. Inspired by the New York Times best-seller “Caste,” Origin explores the mystery of history, the wonders of romance and a fight for the future of us all. Origin is rated PG-13 and is 135 minutes long. The screening is made possible by support from Chautauqua I.D.E.A Coalition.
