The New York State Office of Emergency Management urges residents to prepare for the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8th, emphasizing safety measures to protect eyesight and ensure smooth travel.
NYS Office of Emergency Management: The total solar eclipse is approaching your area on April 8th.
- Keep your eyes protected: don’t look at the sun without certified eclipse glasses from a trusted source.
- Come early, stay late. Allow for plenty of extra travel time. Be prepared for being in heavy traffic by bringing food, water, extra clothing, fuel, and medications.
- Keep up with travel conditions by using 511ny.org.
- Only park in designated areas and do not stop to view the eclipse while on roadways, especially interstates, parkways, and freeways.
- Being stuck in traffic is not an emergency. Contact 9-1-1 for emergencies only.
- Monitor local weather conditions by visiting the National Weather Service or watch your local news.
- Avoid the backcountry. Due to muddy conditions and icy trails in the back country and high peaks, these areas will be dangerous places to view the eclipse.
