(WNY News Now) – Dunkirk, NY—A routine call to quell a large fight on the 500 block of Deer St spiraled into chaos on May 3rd, 2024, as City of Dunkirk Police confronted a belligerent crowd, resulting in charges against two local residents.
Responding to reports of a disturbance at approximately 10:37 PM, Dunkirk Police encountered a volatile scene where officers were met with resistance while attempting to calm the situation. Miguel A. Velez of Dunkirk escalated tensions by allegedly engaging in physical altercations with officers, prompting further unrest among onlookers.
The situation intensified when Omar A. Salome-Hernandez, also of Dunkirk, allegedly assaulted an officer and brandished a chair in an aggressive manner. Additional law enforcement units, including Fredonia Police, New York State Police, and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, were summoned to assist in restoring order.
Velez was subsequently apprehended and issued an appearance ticket for charges including obstructing governmental administration. Meanwhile, Salome-Hernandez fled the scene but was later arrested and arraigned on charges of obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest.
