(WNY News Now) – Washington D.C. – President Biden’s administration has issued condolences following the tragic death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and key officials in a helicopter crash, sparking sharp criticism from Republicans.
The statement released reads:
“The United States expresses its official condolences for the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian, and other members of their delegation in a helicopter crash in northwest Iran. As Iran selects a new president, we reaffirm our support for the Iranian people and their struggle for human rights and fundamental freedoms.”
Republicans have fiercely criticized the statement, calling it “disgusting” and citing it as further evidence of the Biden administration’s weak policy on Iran. The GOP argues that offering condolences to Iranian leadership undermines U.S. opposition to the Iranian regime’s policies.
The statement was issued after confirmation of President Raisi’s death in the helicopter crash.
