(WNY News Now) – Buffalo, NY – As Pride Month celebrations begin across the United States on June 1, 2024, Western New York is gearing up for a week of festivities starting June 2, 2024, in Buffalo, Rochester, and Elmira. These events honor the LGBTQ community and reaffirm the protections provided under the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross emphasizes the importance of these protections, stating, “As U.S. Attorney, I take very seriously any violation of an individual’s civil rights, including members of the LGBTQ community. Since becoming U.S. Attorney, I have increased resources in the Western District of New York, including appointing three Assistant U.S. Attorneys to work on civil rights cases in the district. These AUSAs, as well as support staff members, engage with the community to increase awareness of civil rights and investigate any violations.”

Pride Month is celebrated each June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, a pivotal event in the fight for LGBTQ rights. The Library of Congress describes it as a time to remember and continue the struggle for equality.

As the celebrations commence, the FBI has issued a reminder about safety resources available during Pride Month, encouraging vigilance and awareness. They stress the importance of being informed and prepared to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
