Dunkirk, NY — A dramatic series of events unfolded on Vineyard Drive in Dunkirk, leading to the arrest of an armed fugitive.

On June 21, 2024, at approximately 4:03 PM, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office responded to a complaint involving an attempted robbery. Eric S. Ryals, a 36-year-old male from Columbia, Alabama, was reported to have brandished a handgun in an attempt to steal property from a male victim.

Upon arrival, deputies quickly located Ryals on Vineyard Drive. However, Ryals fled on foot, brandishing the handgun as he ran through a wooded area. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies joined forces to set up a perimeter and pursued Ryals into the woods.

The tense situation escalated when Ryals, refusing to comply with officers’ commands, stopped in the wooded area. A brief standoff ensued, during which officers negotiated with Ryals. Thankfully, the standoff concluded peacefully when Ryals surrendered without further incident.

Ryals now faces multiple charges, including Menacing 2nd Degree, Criminal Impersonation 2nd Degree, Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree, Attempted Robbery 1st Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree. Additionally, Ryals is charged as a Fugitive of Justice due to outstanding warrants from another state.

Following his arrest, Ryals was transported to the Chautauqua County Jail, where he awaits centralized arraignment.
