(WNY News Now) – Chautauqua County Jail – On July 11, 2024, at approximately 12:30 PM, Eric Ryals, an inmate at Chautauqua County Jail, briefly escaped custody. Ryals, 36, managed to access the facility’s rooftop, evading corrections officers in pursuit. Ignoring commands to surrender, he leaped from the roof, landing on the lawn on the Elm Street side.
The escape attempt was short-lived as a pre-established perimeter allowed officers to swiftly apprehend Ryals. He was transported to ECMC for treatment of injuries sustained during his escape. No members of the public were harmed.
A warrant for Escape in the First Degree was signed by the Town of Chautauqua Court Judge.
