(WNY News Now) – New OSHA regulations could jeopardize the existence of volunteer fire departments across New York, prompting Congresswoman Claudia Tenney to call for reconsideration.

Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) urged the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to reconsider expanding burdensome regulations that threaten the closure of volunteer fire departments across New York.

In February, OSHA introduced a new safety and health standard to replace the Fire Brigades Standard, proposing 22 additional rules for all fire departments. These include mandatory facility upgrades and increased training requirements. This extreme proposal would also apply to volunteer fire departments in New York despite the significant financial and operational limitations of many volunteer fire departments. In May, Tenney signed a letter to Assistant Secretary of Labor Douglas Parker urging OSHA to reevaluate these rules and extend the public comment period.

“The proposed OSHA rules would place an incredible burden on the brave men and women who serve our communities across NY-24,” said Congresswoman Tenney. “Following many discussions with volunteer firefighters and fire departments, I strongly urge OSHA to review this rule and consider the negative impact this will have on New York’s volunteer fire departments. We must ensure our public servants are not burdened by unfunded mandates that will only hinder already strained departments.”

3 responses to “Congresswoman Tenney Urges OSHA to Reconsider New Regulations Threatening NY Volunteer Fire Departments”

  1. OSHA, another bloated bureaucracy that’s literally done nothing to help worker safety except to create rules that are onerous, ridiculous, and downright spiteful for companies and employees to follow. More petty tyrants who are basically more desk jockeys than subject matter experts in the fields they’re supposed to be overseeing.

  2. New york would rather spend money on reparations, than give firefighters and departments more money. It’s NY in a nutshell, more taxes more government, more spending on socialism, less common sense laws. After all this NY turns around and wonders where all the less expensive line items went while, the state debt increases substantially. First common sense congestion pricing, and now we will have to pay more in taxes to support local fire departments. There will be no middle class in NY. There will be the elitist and the poor.

  3. Basically if they keep these ridiculous regulations, more volunteer fire departments will be forced to shut down, leaving vast amounts of communities having to rely on the paid fire departments much further away. So by the stroke of a pen they will cause more houses, barns, garages, apartment buildings, buildings of employment, etc, to burn beyond saving. And who knows how many lives, human and animal will be lost?
