Tragedy Strikes as Drunk Driver Causes Fatal Crash
(WNY News Now) – HAMBURG, NY — Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced the indictment of Markus R. Genovese, 53, of Angola, in connection with a tragic collision that claimed the life of an 8-year-old child. Genovese faces a six-count indictment, including charges of manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter.

Authorities allege that on June 8, 2024, at around 8:10 p.m., Genovese, under the influence of alcohol or drugs and without a valid license, rear-ended an SUV stopped at the intersection of Lake Shore Road and Eckhardt Road. The crash resulted in the death of an 8-year-old boy and injuries to a 4-year-old boy in the SUV. Genovese allegedly fled the scene but was soon found and hospitalized.
Genovese has been remanded without bail and faces a pre-trial conference on August 15, 2024. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison. The investigation is ongoing, led by the Town of Hamburg Police Department and prosecuted by ADA Christopher M. McCarthy.
