(WNY News Now) – Lockport – A 19-year-old Sanborn resident has pleaded guilty to Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree after a fatal crash caused by driving under the influence of cannabis.

On August 13, 2024, Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced that Ninaatikwe A. Hamby, 19, of Sanborn, has pleaded guilty to Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree. Hamby admitted to driving under the influence of cannabis in the early hours of February 25th, resulting in a tragic accident at the intersection of Walmore and Upper Mountain Roads in Sanborn. The crash led to the death of a passenger in the vehicle.

District Attorney Seaman emphasized the severity of the case, stating, “The outcome of Ms. Hamby’s decision to drive while under the influence of cannabis was the death of a family member. It just can’t be understated how dangerous it is to drive while under the influence of marijuana. Here the results are the complete devastation of a family.”

Hamby faces a maximum sentence of 7 years in prison when she returns to court for sentencing before County Court Judge John Ottaviano. The investigation was conducted by the Lewiston Police Department and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Vehicular Crimes Bureau Chief Christine Savoia.
