(WNY News Now) – Dunkirk, N.Y. – Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) announced the successful allocation of $4.75 million in federal funding for the Dunkirk Harbor Living Shoreline Project at a press conference. This significant investment, part of the Fiscal Year 2025 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill (H.R. 8752), passed by the House in June, will be instrumental in fortifying Dunkirk Harbor against increasingly severe weather events.

“Growing up, I spent many summers visiting the Dunkirk Harbor, so being able to secure $4.75 million in federal funding for the Living Shoreline Project is incredibly fulfilling,” said Congressman Langworthy. “This investment will protect the harbor from severe weather, support local businesses, and ensure future generations can enjoy it just as we have. I’m proud to advocate for the Southern Tier throughout the House appropriations process and return hard-earned tax dollars for meaningful projects that will make a real difference.”

The project’s funding will support the design and construction of offshore breakwaters, along with the creation of a living shoreline. These enhancements are critical for shielding the harbor from storm surges and erosion, safeguarding both local infrastructure and economic stability. Dunkirk Harbor has faced growing threats from extreme weather, endangering not only the physical environment but also the economic vitality of the area, which depends on maritime industries and tourism.

Langworthy was joined at the press conference by several key local leaders, including Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel, Dunkirk Mayor Kate Wdowiasz, and Dunkirk Director of Planning and Development Vince DeJoy. They each highlighted the project’s potential to protect the community and ensure its sustainability for future generations.
