(WNY News Now) – Wheatfield, NY — A hazardous materials incident at Archem, Inc. in Wheatfield led to swift emergency response and precautionary hospitalization for three employees.

In the early hours of Monday, September 30, 2024, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hazardous material incident at the Archem, Inc. building located in the Town of Wheatfield. At approximately 3:20 AM, a 911 call was placed reporting a chemical spill inside the facility, estimated at around 100 gallons.

Local emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, with the response led by a joint command from the Bergholz Volunteer Fire Company, Niagara Air Reserve Station, Sanborn Volunteer Fire Company, and the Niagara County Fire Coordinator’s Office. These teams were joined by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara County Hazardous Materials Team, Tri-Community Ambulance, Niagara County EMS, and Shawnee Volunteer Ambulance to manage the situation.

Three Archem employees were transported for medical evaluation and precautionary decontamination. Two of the workers were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, while the third was sent to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. All three were evaluated as a precaution, and no severe injuries were reported.

The spill was contained, and emergency teams successfully stabilized the scene without further exposure to the chemical or risk to the surrounding area. Officials confirmed that there are no environmental or health threats to nearby businesses or residents.

Further investigation into the cause of the spill is underway, as authorities work to ensure the incident does not pose any ongoing risk.
