(WNY News Now) – As the fall season unfolds, the City of Jamestown Parks Department has commenced its annual winter preparations to ensure the city’s parks and public spaces are ready for the colder months.

JAMESTOWN, NY – October 4, 2024 – As the fall season progresses, the City of Jamestown Parks Department has begun its annual preparations to ready the city’s parks and public properties for the winter season. These efforts focus on protecting city assets, ensuring public safety, and setting the stage for a smooth reopening in the spring.

In preparation for the colder weather, the Parks Department is removing damaged tables and garbage receptacles from parks and public spaces to prevent further deterioration. This includes the removal of garbage cans along the Riverwalk due to damage, with new receptacles tentatively set to be installed next spring.

Thanks to the County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency (CCIDA) and the Chautauqua River Activation Project, additional amenities for the Riverwalk will be replaced and upgraded in the spring. We extend our gratitude to the CCIDA and look forward to enjoying these new amenities in the near future.  

To protect infrastructure, the department will soon shut off water at the Splash Pads and throughout city parks. Consequently, public restrooms will be closed and secured for the winter to prevent pipe freezing and potential damage.

The department is also conducting inspections and repairs on park structures, such as benches, shelters, and playgrounds, addressing any existing damage before winter sets in. Seasonal equipment, including playground components, benches, and trash receptacles, is being safely stored to shield it from harsh winter conditions.

In an effort to maintain accessibility, city crews are working to clear trails, paths, and sidewalks to ensure they remain safe for public use before snow and ice accumulate.

The Parks Department’s proactive measures will keep Jamestown’s public spaces remain well-maintained and ready for the community’s enjoyment when warmer weather returns. Residents can look forward to a full reopening of the parks come springtime
