(WNY News Now) – The trial of Hadi Matar, the man facing charges after the stabbing of author Salman Rushdie on August 12, 2022, has been adjourned until the Appellate Division issues a decision regarding a change of venue motion filed by the Defense.

Mayville, N.Y. – The Chautauqua County District Attorney, Jason Schmidt, has announced that the court overseeing The People v. Hadi Matar has issued a stay of trial. This comes after the Defense filed a motion to change the venue of the case, and all court proceedings will be halted until the Appellate Division comes to a determination regarding that motion. The trial was initially set to begin jury selection today before the Court’s decision, which was rendered Friday afternoon.

The Defendent, Hadi Matar, faces charges of Attempted Murder in the 2nd Degree and Assault in the 2nd Degree. If convicted of both charges, he could receive a maximum sentence of 32 years, if the sentences were to be served consecutively.
