(WNY News Now) – A New Albion man faces serious charges after allegedly firing a rifle at a passerby, prompting law enforcement intervention.

On October 19, 2024, at approximately 10:35 AM, law enforcement officials were called to 10568 Tug Hill Rd. in Cattaraugus, NY, following reports of reckless behavior involving firearms. Sheriff Eric A. Butler confirmed the arrest of 67-year-old James A. Kalata after an investigation revealed that Kalata had fired a .22 caliber rifle at a man entering a nearby field to hunt.

Kalata faces charges of Menacing in the second degree and Reckless Endangerment in the second degree. He was issued an appearance ticket and has been released pending his court date. He is scheduled to appear in the Town of New Albion Court at a later date, where he will face the charges brought against him. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
