(WNY News Now) – A domestic incident in Dunkirk led to an arrest on Saturday night after a man barricaded himself inside an apartment, facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.
Dunkirk, NY – On October 26, 2024, at approximately 7:03 PM, Dunkirk police officers responded to a domestic dispute on the 700 block of Main Street. The female victim managed to escape her residence and sought help from a neighbor, who then called 911. Upon arrival, officers learned that the suspect, Edwin Chmielewski III, 36, from Gowanda, had allegedly entered the victim’s residence unlawfully and engaged in a series of aggressive acts, including attempting to choke her and preventing her from leaving or contacting authorities.
Chmielewski, who had a restraining order mandating he avoid the victim and location, also had several outstanding arrest warrants. Despite repeated attempts to negotiate his surrender, Chmielewski barricaded himself inside the apartment. After officers were unable to make contact, they forcibly entered the residence, ultimately locating Chmielewski hiding beneath a mattress in the bedroom.
Chmielewski was taken into custody and transported to the Dunkirk Police Department, where he was processed on a series of charges, including Burglary in the Second Degree, Criminal Contempt in the First Degree, Unlawful Imprisonment in the Second Degree, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, and Obstructing Governmental Administration. Additionally, he faces charges related to his previous outstanding warrants.
Chmielewski is currently held pending arraignment. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
