(WNY News Now) – Syracuse, NY – A year-long investigation into the tragic killing of 15-year-old Karon Works has culminated in the arrest of a third suspect, a 17-year-old male, on December 3, 2024. This case continues to unfold as detectives pursue justice for the young victim.

At approximately 7:53 p.m., Syracuse Police responded to multiple ShotSpotter alerts and 911 calls reporting gunfire near the 100 block of Cheney Street. Officers discovered Karon Works, born December 31, 2007, near Lower Onondaga Park with multiple gunshot wounds. Responders rendered aid before transporting him to Upstate University Hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, Works succumbed to his injuries.
The Investigation
From the onset, the Syracuse Police Department’s Homicide Unit launched a rigorous investigation. Detectives conducted extensive interviews, neighborhood canvassing, and citywide searches. Multiple search warrants were executed, and critical evidence was meticulously analyzed.
This tireless work led to identifying a third suspect in the case, a 17-year old male.
Arrest and Charges
On December 3, 2024, members of the Syracuse Police Department Warrant Squad located and apprehended the 17-year-old suspect in the 300 block of Grant Avenue. He was charged with the following crimes:
- Murder in the Second Degree (Penal Law 125.25)
- Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (Penal Law 265.03)
The suspect was subsequently detained at the Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Center.
