(WNY News Now) – HARRISBURG — Attorney General Michelle Henry is alerting Pennsylvania consumers about the potential closure of all 64 Big Lots stores across the state due to the company’s ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

Big Lots, one of the largest discount retailers in the U.S., announced that its remaining locations may shut their doors as part of the bankruptcy process. These closures could impact Pennsylvania residents, particularly those who rely on the retailer’s deeply discounted goods.

What Consumers Need to Know

In light of these developments, Attorney General Henry advises consumers to take the following steps:

  1. Use Credit Cards for Purchases: To protect yourself, make purchases using a credit card. This allows consumers to dispute charges if the transaction needs to be reversed, especially if store closures affect pending orders.
  2. Review Store Policies: Before making a purchase, check Big Lots’ return and refund policies. Ensure you’re aware of any changes to store policies during the liquidation process.
  3. Gift Cards and Rewards: Consumers with gift cards or rewards points should verify the terms and conditions of their cards. Big Lots’ bankruptcy may impact the usability of these rewards, so it’s best to use them as soon as possible.
  4. Verify Inventory: If shopping via the “buy-online-pickup-in-store” option, confirm store inventory beforehand. Many locations are in the process of liquidating stock, which could affect product availability.

A federal bankruptcy court previously authorized Big Lots to conduct going-out-of-business sales at all of its remaining stores, which commenced December 20, 2024.

The bankruptcy court has established an amended deadline of Friday, January 31, 2025 for consumers, who may have claims against Big Lots, to file a Proof of Claim.

It is highly recommended that consumers consult with a private attorney to ensure their rights are protected in the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings.

Consumers can file a Proof of Claim electronically by going to the Delaware Bankruptcy Court’s website at https://www.deb.uscourts.gov/claims-information or by going to the bankruptcy administrator’s website at https://cases.ra.kroll.com/biglots/EPOC-Index.

Consumers who feel they have been impacted by Big Lots’ closures or bankruptcy process should file a complaint with the Bureau of Consumer Protection. Complaints can be submitted online, or consumers can contact the office’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-441-2555 for further assistance. The Bureau will provide updates to those who have filed complaints regarding the status of Big Lots’ bankruptcy case.
