(WNY News Now) – Buffalo, NY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a High Wind Warning in effect until 2:00 PM EDT today, March 16.

Hazardous Wind Conditions Expected

South winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching up to 60 mph are expected across Chautauqua and Southern Erie Counties, with the strongest gusts occurring near the Lake Erie shoreline.

  • Strong winds may bring down trees and power lines, leading to scattered power outages.
  • Travel will be challenging, particularly for high-profile vehicles on the New York Thruway, where winds will blow directly across the highway.

Authorities advise residents to:

  • Stay indoors, particularly in the lower levels of your home, and avoid windows.
  • Avoid wooded areas and trees, as falling debris poses a significant risk.
