(WNY News Now) – A 30-year-old Salamanca resident was arrested early Thursday morning following a traffic stop on East State Street involving multiple bicycle violations and a brief foot pursuit.
SALAMANCA, NY – The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of Angelo A. Contreraz, 30, of Salamanca, in the early morning hours of April 10, 2025, after a traffic stop involving a bicycle escalated into a short pursuit.
According to deputies, the incident occurred at approximately 4:22 a.m. on East State Street in the City of Salamanca. Contreraz was stopped for operating a bicycle with inadequate lighting and without a bell or signal device—violations of New York State traffic regulations.
When deputies attempted to stop him, Contreraz allegedly failed to comply and struck a patrol vehicle with his bicycle before fleeing the scene on foot. Law enforcement pursued and, after a brief struggle, took him into custody without further incident.
Contreraz was transported to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office for processing and later released with an appearance ticket and several uniform traffic tickets. He is charged with Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Governmental Administration in the Second Degree, and two counts of No/Inadequate Lights (Bicycle), as well as No Bell/Signal Device (Bicycle).
He is scheduled to appear in Salamanca City Court at a later date for further proceedings. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
