(WNY News Now) – A 64-year-old Machias resident faces animal cruelty charges after a police investigation into the mistreatment of a 3-year-old dog.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of Maryann A. Boatner, 64, of Machias, following an investigation into an animal abuse complaint reported on April 25, 2025.

According to Sheriff Eric A. Butler, deputies responded to a call involving a 3-year-old dog and initiated an investigation into the animal’s condition. As a result, Boatner was charged under New York Agriculture and Markets Law with two offenses: Section 353-a, Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, and Section 353, Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance.

Boatner was issued an appearance ticket and released. She is scheduled to appear in Machias Town Court at a later date. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
