(WNY News Now) – Governor Kathy Hochul confirms that the federally halted Empire Wind 1 clean energy project will resume, saving 1,500 union jobs and advancing New York’s renewable energy goals.
ALBANY, NY — Governor Kathy Hochul announced Monday that construction on the Empire Wind 1 offshore wind project will resume after a federal stop work order issued in April was lifted by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
The project, developed by Equinor, was initially paused on April 16, prompting concerns over the future of clean energy expansion and job creation in New York. Hochul stated that she engaged in several weeks of discussions with Equinor representatives, White House officials, and labor and business leaders to advocate for the project’s reinstatement.
“I knew this critical project needed to move forward and have spent weeks pushing the federal government to rescind the stop work order,” said Hochul. “After countless conversations, I’m pleased that President Trump and Secretary Burgum have agreed to lift the stop work order and allow this project to move forward.”
Empire Wind 1 is fully permitted and had previously received federal approvals to proceed. Its development is expected to power hundreds of thousands of homes with renewable energy while creating thousands of jobs, including 1,500 union positions that were at risk due to the halt.
Governor Hochul emphasized New York’s commitment to clean energy and economic growth, reaffirming the state’s willingness to collaborate with federal and private partners on future projects that meet all legal standards under state law. She also highlighted the importance of ensuring energy reliability and affordability for consumers as part of New York’s broader energy strategy.
“I fought to save clean energy jobs in New York — and we got it done,” Hochul added. “New York’s economic future is going to be powered by abundant, clean energy that helps our homes and businesses thrive.”
