(WNY News Now) – The City of Jamestown has issued a reminder to residents that keeping barn animals such as chickens and pigs is not allowed within city residential districts, following several recent complaints.

Jamestown city officials have responded to multiple complaints this spring concerning the presence of barn animals like chickens and pigs in residential neighborhoods. To clarify, the City Code prohibits the housing of barn animals within city limits in designated residential areas.

According to City Code §300-0305 governing the R-1 Single-Family Residential District, new agricultural operations involving barn animals are not permitted. This includes animals such as cows, horses, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, and other similar livestock. While agricultural operations that existed prior to the enactment of the code may continue, they must not produce odors or dust within 100 feet of adjacent properties.

Similarly, under §300-0306 for the R-2 Two-Family Residential District, permitted uses align with those in the R-1 District, which means barn animals remain prohibited in these areas as well.

City officials urge residents to comply with these regulations to maintain neighborhood standards and prevent potential disturbances related to livestock. For further information or to report concerns, residents are encouraged to contact the City of Jamestown Department of Development.
