(WNY News Now) – ALLEGANY, N.Y. — A routine traffic stop in the Village of Allegany early Saturday morning led to the arrest of two Wellsville residents on felony drug charges, according to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office.

On May 31, 2025, at approximately 4:04 a.m., deputies initiated a traffic stop on Harriet Street for multiple vehicle and traffic law violations. During the stop, law enforcement identified the driver and passenger as Ashley M. Sweet, 31, and Alec W. Kessler, 28, both of Wellsville, New York.

Deputies discovered that Kessler had an active felony bench warrant issued by the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office. While investigating the vehicle, deputies observed drug paraphernalia in plain view. A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of approximately 15.9 grams of suspected methamphetamine, a digital scale, various packaging materials, and additional drug paraphernalia.

Both Sweet and Kessler were taken into custody and transported to the Sheriff’s Olean Substation for processing. They were later arraigned in the Town of Hinsdale Court.

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 2nd Degree (Stimulant)
  • Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the 2nd Degree – Packaging Materials
  • Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the 2nd Degree – Scales
  • Felony Bench Warrant

Ashley M. Sweet, 31

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 2nd Degree (Stimulant)
  • Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the 2nd Degree – Packaging Materials
  • Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the 2nd Degree – Scales
  • Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle
  • Operating an Uninspected Motor Vehicle
  • Parking/Standing on a Highway

Following arraignment, both individuals were remanded to the Cattaraugus County Jail. They are scheduled to appear in the Village of Allegany Court at a later date for further proceedings. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
