Deputy Injured, Armed Man Killed After Confrontation at French Creek Road Residence
(WNY News Now) – MINA, NY — A domestic disturbance call on Wednesday afternoon escalated into an officer-involved shooting, leaving one man dead and a sheriff’s deputy injured.
On June 18, 2025, at approximately 3:34 p.m., the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a domestic incident at 2900 Mina French Creek Road. Two deputies arrived on the scene by 3:55 p.m. and encountered an armed man outside the residence.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the subject, later identified as 66-year-old Mark W. Bemis, was holding a shotgun and fired one round shortly after deputies arrived. He allegedly pointed the weapon at one of the deputies multiple times, ignoring repeated commands to drop the firearm.
In the exchange of gunfire that followed, one deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his hands. Mark Bemis was struck by rounds fired by the deputies. An additional deputy who arrived on the scene rendered first aid to Bemis until emergency medical services arrived.
Despite life-saving efforts by EMS personnel from Chautauqua County and local volunteer fire departments, Bemis was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured deputy was transported to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pennsylvania, and was later released.
The incident remains under investigation. Agencies assisting in the response and ongoing investigation include the New York State Police, multiple local police departments, the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office, and the Chautauqua County Coroner’s Office.
Sheriff Jim Quattrone is overseeing the investigation, and further details will be released as they become available.
